The Leys is an inclusive school where we focus on the well-being and progress of every child - all members of our community are of equal worth. As a result all pupils are entitled to a structured, balanced and challenging curriculum that is suited to their needs and their aspirations.
Providing enriching learning experiences for all our pupils is vital and this includes specific provision for the most able. We believe that the development of provision for gifted, talented and the most able pupils will improve provision for pupils of all abilities.

6. Ensure that all teachers share responsibility for the monitoring of pupils, including the Higher Attainers;

8. Provide opportunities for all pupils to develop their strengths through high quality extra-curricular activities and curriculum enrichment, including specific provision for more able (including High Attainers);
9. Consider the personal, social and emotional needs of all pupils, including those of our most able;
10. Work in partnership with parents to maximise the opportunities for pupils’ to reach their potential;
11. Celebrate the achievements of all pupils;
12. Use national standards to regularly review our provision for more able (including High Attainers) pupils.

In recognition of our commitment to getting the best out of high-achieving pupils, the school has achieved the National Association for Able Children in Education (NACE) Challenge Award.
The NACE Challenge Award Framework is a whole-school self-evaluation tool and process which allows an in-depth analysis of provision for able, gifted and talented pupils.
Representatives from NACE spent time at the school observing lessons and interviewing pupils, teachers, parents and governors. They were particularly impressed by importance placed on the needs of more able learners.

“The Leys Primary & Nursery School has worked hard to attain accreditation through the NACE Challenge Award. It has shown itself to be committed to developing an environment in which all learners are challenged and supported to be the best they can be.”
The well being of all pupils including our MA pupils is of utmost importance here at The Leys’. We recognise that our MA may need pastoral support from time to time. This will be provided in a discrete manner as and when required. Pupils who are identified as underachieving through our tracking system will also be mentored and supported.
All staff know which pupils have been identified as MA and the individual learning styles of pupils in their Curriculum Area and those who are More Able in a range of subjects. Curriculum areas may include the following:
• Teachers implementing Bloom’s Taxonomy, AFL and Thinking skills in their classrooms alongside other teaching strategies.
• Grouping by ability
• Chili challenges
• Mastery task
• Challenging next steps
• Extra Curricular clubs
• Links with outside organizations
We have a culture of celebration at The Leys’ and celebrating the achievements of our pupils is very important to us. House points are awarded regularly and pupil achievements are certificates presented in assemblies.

Tips for parents:
• Help your child to see that grappling with challenge is more important than any amount of easy success.
• Try not to fixate on scores as measures of success.
• Help your child to see that trying and effort are desirable- not a demonstration of struggle or failure.
• Encourage your child to take as responsibility as they can for managing their behaviour and learning and thereby offer them the opportunity to be trusted.
• Try not to accept first responses too quickly.
• Ask your child to justify their opinions as thoroughly as they can.
• Encourage them not to over-simplify their explanation.
• Try not to praise talent before effort.
• No early rescuing! Encourage thought effort and if needed, a break and then more thought.

Suggestions for supporting able children at home
• Read with them, and to them, even if they are good readers.
• Able children enjoy learning new words. Have a new ‘word of the week’ at home.
• Extend their general knowledge with a ‘fact of the week’.
• Encourage physical activity to develop co-ordination and general fitness.
• Do not always focus on your child’s obvious skills. Encourage him or her to sample new activities.
• Information and Communication Technology offers vast possibilities. Schools can advise on appropriate websites.
• All types of puzzles, crosswords, logic games, word games, card games and board games help to develop children’s thinking skills and social interaction.
• Learn a new language together.
• Give children a broad range of experiences.
• Sometimes the most effective support that a parent can provide may be to limit the number of engagements and formal activities their child is exposed to, in order to ensure that the child has the space and free time in which to play, experiment and develop hobbies and interests of his or her own.
